A mosaic is a multifaceted pattern, assembled by arranging together small pieces of different types. To create a music album release named “Mosaic” follows pretty much the same principles. Snippets of sounds and creative ideas from various sources take form, in this case to a brandnew Lemongrass album. Roland Voss, mastermind behind the project, widely opened his (audio) diaries and selected some precious bits and pieces for his 34th longplayer.
A broadly diverse choice of instrumentation and styles is fanned out for us, influenced by inspirational sources such as memories of visiting breathtaking places, favourite books and movies, or by just being still in a meditative moment. As so often before, acoustic instrumentation got the lead, sprinkled with jazzy vibes (“Turn down the lights”) a cool and easy JazzHop costume (“Street Life” ) or a fabulous tabla rhythm (“Le voyage”, “Bombay Jazz”), linking to the predecessor album “Dreams of Maya”.

As the title suggests, the EP „Space Odyssey“ takes the listener on a journey to the wonders of the universe. The overall impression is of some dreamlike atmosphere, where gravity has ceased to exist and weight has lost its meaning. Such is the sound that will make you examine the miracles and landscapes of the mind.
The music on this EP is made without any beats, but unlike the music in the „Ambient Land“ series you will find sounds of a more gloomy character in „Space Odyssey“.The pictures and the atmosphere in the same titled movie by Stanley Kubrick have served as a source of inspiration for this EP.
Roland Voss uses bits of sound and melody and slowly evolving pads and textures instead of traditional music and narrative techniques.

For 20 years now, Lemongrass has been accompanying us. Doubtless a very rarely reached jubilee in the music business, which usually gets celebrated with a best-of compilation. Lots of exciting things are going on in the global Ambient and Electronic Listening scene these days. In an unbiased manner, musical worlds approach each other, that seemed almost incompatible for a long time. Whether acoustic music, contemporary classical music or hip-hop – such styles join a boundless melange to something new, which has an high artistic value, and is gaining new fans in a rapid pace. Roland Voss aka “Lemongrass” is part of this creative stream. Over many years, a distinctive “Lemongrass” sound has been developed in an essential process of maturation. Culminating now with a new album release called “Mémoires”.

Already the opener, “Journal Intime” is a wonderful testimony for the derived stylistic fruition. On a creaky-minimal rhythm enfold heart warming, ethereal sound images, peaking in the middle part by the addition of a stunning piano motif. Fine-tuned piano sounds are recurrently defining elements in the further course of the album. In “Liaison”, a typical “Lemongrass” bassline groove builds to an airy, buttery soft daydreamer. “Sacred Dreams” fascinates with a deep piano-loop and heavenly backing vocals in harmony with a playful scratchy glitch-hop rhythm. Highlight here is the brief interlude of a cool, distorted guitar. The title of the subsequent “I’m stellar” is almost programmatic for the spiritual flow of the album. Carefully produced in detail, “I’m stellar” is led by a simple guitar melody, on which the track harmoniously unfolds.

With “Oiseau de Paradis” Roland Voss loosens up his journey with a trip to Mediterranean regions. Sweet summery harmonies awaken anticipation for the warm and light-coloured time of the year. With “Summer fields”, we remain a little longer in the sunshine. Wonderfully laid-back, the track grooves along, based on subtle hip-hop elements. Don’t be surprised if your head starts nodding on its own, and a broad smile appears on your face. The album continues with some best of lounge music. “Bossa del mar” impresses with stunning Hispanic vocals, inviting the listener to the next Ibiza beach party. Also “Poetry without words” is a piece of evidence for the “Lemongrass” talent, to produce finest Lounge Couture. A repetitive loop of various strings enriches the song with a sunny 70′s appeal. Subsequently “Heartbreaker” takes the album back to a deeper sound cosmos. Just like “I’m stellar”, this title is a co-production with Roland’s brother Daniel Voss. Truly, the song is a sleek heartbreaker, in advance legitimately chosen by the audience as a highlight on DJ Nartak’s “Klassik Lounge Nightflight Vol.06″ compilation.

A little more deeper, we travel with “Moment de conscience”. A feeling of atmospheric wideness allows us to slide into the endless open space. We enjoy a timeless moment of deep relaxation and inner silence. Right there we get picked up by “Tropical Nights”. A delicate acoustic guitar motif and heavenly chantings are framed by tropical night sounds. The following title is a tribute to the legendary Japanese “Shinkansen” high-speed trains. A chill-out (train) ride at its best, led by an elegant broken beat, which floats on melodic strings. In the background we can hear sounds of the puffing “Shinkansen” monstrosities. “Love is the answer” is the ideal quote to play the final chord of the album. Positive tuned string-arrangements ensure a safe, well-guarded journey home.

In a relaxed and stylish manner, “Mémoires” is a real milestone. With its playful and homogeneous aura, the album sounds as a unified whole. Shaped by a bewitching depth, “Mémoires” convinces on a musical top level. At the same time, it provides the impressive evidence, that Roland Voss is rightly considered as one of the most famous composers and producers in the scene.

Sirius is the most luminescent star in the night sky. A light years away double-galaxy, considered as a mystical symbol by many ancient cultures. This is the chosen destination of Lemongrass’s new album. The terrifically epic opener “Where is Mr. Spock?” seems to leave Lemongrass Mastermind Roland Voss puzzled of where the famous Half-Vulcan might be. But there is no need to worry for Mr. Voss. On this expedition he does perfectly fine without Mr. Spock on the bridge. Sovereign with a reliable sense of style Roland Voss keeps his very well maintained space ship on target. But we shouldn’t be surprised. For more than 15 years he has constantly been proving to be one of the best and most experienced Lounge & Ambient pioneers. He simply knows how it all works. The outstanding quality of this album is to be harmonious in atmosphere and artistic expression. A brilliant flow which brings us back to the primal idea of “Chillout” – to experience mental stillness and refreshing relaxation. But it’s striking to see how seemingly effortless it happens. Zero gravity becomes audible.

As usual Lemongrass’s range of drums and percussion is sticking out. Well for those who don’t know, Roland Voss is an educated drummer. Either as a cool down-tempo groove (Deep Blue), as a playful broken beat Jazz rhythm (Jazz Bandits) or just with a discrete Snare, the choice is always brought to the point. Likewise he deals with the rest of his instrumentation, which is colourfully set in team with well produced arrangements. Overall “Sirius” appears as an outstanding release far away from Lounge & Chillout stereotype and without samples we already have heard far too often. Therefore this expedition never gets boring. Even after listening countless times there are still new dimensions to discover leading to shimmering galaxies.

The ones who know Lemongrass since awhile will note the influence of the very successful “Ambient Land” series. The two so far released issues seem to have prepared the ground for “Sirius” by strengthening Roland Voss’s encouragement for atmospheric deepness. But don’t be anxious that this journey might drift into a wafting abyss. Whenever it is needed Roland Voss brings back dynamic straightness combined with cheerfulness and positivity to his space ship. This expedition is a true honour to the galaxy of the same name by shining as bright as the famous star system itself. It underlines that Lemongrass is rightly considered as one of the most influential artist of the global Chillout & Ambient scene. Hopefully Mr. Spock puts his intergalactic radio on once in awhile. It would be a pity if his Half-Vulcan ears would miss this “Sirius” expedition.

On his eleventh album, the French influences of the predecessors „Pour L’Amour“ (2008) and „Filmothèque“ (2007) still shine through but the extraordinary voices of Karen Gibson Roc and Suzy Duffy add a completely new touch thanks to their NuSoul vocal style. Framed by sun-drenched, marvelously airy instrumentals and embellished with rolling beats, the album immediately turns on its charm. If „The 5th Dimension“ were a bottle of wine you would have to describe it as superbly matured, full-bodied and abundant with fascinating nuances. As it is a music album you may depict it as an intriguing soundtrack for a journey through time and space towards its final destination: the soul, or the fifth dimension of human imagination.

Right the very first track „Crystal Mind“ is spellbinding. Smooth beats snake through your auditory canals before they sink down to warm your heart, a sweet experience only to be topped off by some ingeniously embedded chirps. The following „Maison à la Mer“ starts with heavy beats and an enchanting vibe which could originate in the fabulous world of Amelie, until an underwater break provides some cool contrast. After this favourable opening, the time has come to introduce the wonderful Karen Gibson Roc. Born in Jamaica, raised in Canada and living in Brooklyn, she sings as determined as she lives her life. Her warm and powerful voice has a haunting quality which prompted an American critic to the statement that „she must somehow be involved with the salvation of the universe“. Relying on a head-nodding beat, her ballad „You Gotta Be Free“ is a wondrously poetic homage to her recently deceased father. In „On The Edge of Time“ her voice brilliantly harmonises with the underlying beats. „Reflection“ demonstrates the unique precision and range of her voice while on the production side a playful break adds extra pleasure. In fine contrast, the the subsequent „Alone“ has a compelling melancholic touch.

Deep down into the groove you can step with „Lucky“, a song where Scottish singer Suzy Duffy radiates her glamorous vibe, further underscored by perfectly arranged horns. The following instrumental track „Passion Fruit“ boosts the preceding impact with massive beats before the NuSoul dominated bulk is taken to its conclusion by the slow-motion track „Strip-Tease“ where piano, drums, bass and saxophone is arranged in some well-balanced interplay.

The bossa touch in „Everything You Want“, the airy interlude in „Lightness of Being“ and „Bonjour“, a track evoking images of a breakfast in sunny Paris, add further colours. Embedded in the album’s laid-back end with introspective pearls such as „Magnificent“ and „Balcony“, the ambient track „Satellite“ refers to the opening title with its chirping sounds, this time in electronic-driven form. A nice conclusion to a lovingly crafted album.

In the wake of his stimulating download EP „Ambient Land“ which surprised as the first Lemongrass ambient release ever, Roland Voss did some homework to drop his first ambient album. And he did so with diligence, inspiration and dedication. As was the vibe on the EP which the basis of the 12 album tracks is taken from, the overall impression is of some dreamlike atmosphere, where gravity has ceased to exist and weight has lost its meaning. Extended to full album length, Lemongrass creates an artfully induced state of relaxation and concentration in which deeper parts of the mind become accessible and respond with joy. No beats but a pleasing breeze makes you explore the wonders of your inner self.

The opening track „Star Child“ calls for universal love and takes the listener on a journey to acknowledge his inner strength and positive energy. We are all star children ! The gentle keys of „Polar Nights“ take you into endless space, the purity of which is best compared by ice crystals and a flawless and innocent white. „Eclipse of the Sun“ is only strings and marks a break in time when you hold your breath and everything stands still. Then, slight variations of the sound pattern lead the way for peaceful introspection. „Coral Reef“ wraps you up in soothing warmth. The tender strings are enhanced by bubbling sounds, like fresh oxygen in the turquoise calmness of the sea.

After that, it’s time to move on. „Voyager“ has a floating vibe, a feeling of seeing the beauty of the world passing before your inner eye in the most breathtaking samples. Or is it you in space, admiring the blue planet earth? „Moonwalk“ is of such reconciliating quality that it opens up the heart and firmly plants a feeling of profound gratitude. „Inner Worlds“ is the track which probably most refers to the album title. Attentive listening reveals some disturbing underlying sounds and a train-like movement pushing you on. Above these inner currents is a redeeming hypnotic sound pattern calling for tranquility. One of the album’s finest moment appears with the opening chords and gently stroked cymbals of „Water People“. This track is so amazingly beautiful that it feels like colourful flowers popping up everywhere around you. Pling, pling, there are some more. Fans of Lemongrass learned to love the beautiful melody of „Habla Mi Corazón“ after it surfaced on „Lemongrass Garden Vol. 2“. The yearning and consoling vocals of singer Skadi (alternating between English, French and Spanish) embedded in dramatic arrangements have fascinated ever since. This slow-moving but powerful track is now again available for download and comes with three additional versions all of which remarkable in their discreet elegance.

Most notably of course is the contribution of Kevin Yost who blows a cool breeze over the original, creating a spheric vibe with a floral bouquet. At the latest when you discover the vibraphon solo you know a true master has been at work.

UK project JetTricks offer an equally convincing version by imparting a psychedelic touch which keeps on surprising with slight alternations. Nice drum patterns take you through the whole song and keep you glued to its beauty.

Lemongrass’ own „Dreamy version“ completes the bunch. Convincing with an ambient prelude, this luxuriously laid-back version sends you off to damn sweet reveries.

Roland Voss aka Lemongrass has every reason to celebrate. His brand-new album „Pour l’Amour“ is his tenth in a row of outstanding releases and continues to play with jazz elements already known from the preceding album „Filmothèque“. In contrast to his previous instrumental approach, the sound on the new album gains further momentum by the beautiful voices of three female vocalists: Hamburg-based artist Skadi (known from “Fleur Solaire”), Tokyo singer Mayu (known from „Ikebana“) and New York songstress Manalili add truly soul-tickling pleasures.

Whereas „Filmothèque“ presented itself as a genre-bending album incorporating the most diverse ingredients, themes and plots, „ Pour L’Amour“ comes as an all-embracing encyclopedia covering the eternal theme of love, which perpetrates the album in all facets transforming the overall theme into inspiring music with sense and sensibiltiy.

„Pour L’Amour“ has it all and thoroughly finds the perfect corresponding sound: from the city of lovers („Cafe de Paris“) to the sea of love („Ocean Kisses“), from aperitif and dinner to holding hands on a walk („La Promenade“), from the racing pulse and poetry of the heart („Habla Mi Corazon“) to the seductive fragrance of the beloved („Ton Parfum“), and from the merriness of the first shared holidays („Les Vacances“) to yearning remembrance and evocation of happy days („Nostalgia“).

Whoever once jumped into the refreshing waters of a private pool with his hot new love will appreciate the playful beats of „Swimming Pool“. „Le Ciel“ and „Aperitif“ give excellent proof of how much life can be coaxed out of the venerable jazz genre. And right from the first beats, „Dinner With You“ has candles flickering and hearts throbbing. An animating, elating and magical conjuring of the power of love.

With beautifully exhaled vocals, Manalili gives „For All Season“ and „Running Away“ a delightful touch. Mayu lends her graceful voice quite exhilaratingly to „Tsuki“ (the moon). And Skadi weaves through „Habla Mi Corazon“ with a dreamlike mixture of French, English and Spanish. Here, careful listening promises extra pleasures, as the delicate organ solo once more underlines the skills and magic of Lemongrass.

With „Pour L’Amour“ Lemongrass has managed to stay true to his extraordinary legacy while at the same time creating something altogether new. An hommage to love and an exquisite sensual treat.

As the title suggests, the EP „Ambient Land“ takes the listener on a journey to the wonders of the earth. The overall impression is of some dreamlike atmosphere, where gravity has ceased to exist and weight has lost its meaning. Up, up into the sky seems to be the motto. Down, down into your soul is where the five tracks will take you. Such is the sound that it will make you examine the wonders of the mind. The way: no beats, but a pleasing breeze.

First, the gentle keys of „Polar Nights“ take you into an endless space, the purity of which is best compared by ice crystals and an untouched, flawless and innocent white.

By contrast, the „Eclipse of the Sun“ is only strings and marks a timeless spot, or better said, a break in time when everything stands still, when you hold your breath. The oh-so-slight variations of the sound pattern lead the way for peaceful introspection.

While the first two tracks radiate a pleasantly padded cool, „Coral Reef“ wraps you up in soothing warmth. The tender strings are enhanced by bubbling sounds, like fresh oxygen in the calmness of the sea. Then, „Lake of Lava“ strikes a more energetic chord, plucking vibrant sounds and sending them drip-dropping into the depth of the cosmic consciousness.

The concluding „Moonwalk“ is of such reconciliating quality that it opens up the heart and firmly plants a feeling of profound gratitude.

With his ninth album in ten years, Lemongrass goes back to his roots he first musically explored with his classics „Lumière Obscure“ and „Voyage au Centre de La Terre“. In contrast to his previous releases and counteracting the present trend he does without vocals, draws heavily from jazz influences and gives way to amazing and sparkling ideas.

In spite of his new approach, „Filmothèque“ is once again a true Lemonglass album which captivates with imaginative arrangements. Each track opens a new door to virtual worlds, leading the listener straight into cineastic plots full of breathtaking landscapes and charismatic characters. The panoramic view ranges from black&white vintage detective stories to Japanese animation art, modern science-fiction and love stories from daily soaps. There’s plenty of room for melodramatic turns – and some of the movies evoked still wait for being directed. At the end of the day there is no limit to the listener’s imagination. And – for goodness sake – without the interruption of dreary commercials.

To get a first impression of the masterpiece, you best tune in to „Salon de Musique“, a track which holds most of the album’s powerful ingredients: beautiful arrangements, jazzy elements and a fascinating story behind every single beat. Stronger love vibes (peppered with James-Bond-style suspense) can be admired in „Elle et Moi“. Jazzy as never before is the sound of „The Camera“ and „Fritz the Cat“ – opposed by the following „Aloha“ which could be labeled as Lemongrass’ trademark serenity on the highest level. Listen to „Daydreamer“ and you’ll come across the story of a feathery love affair, then switch to „Spaceship“ to discover how majestic a feeling solitude can be. „Les Affaires“ is a deep dramatic bow to the sound of the ‚film noir’ genre while „Streets of Yokohama“ offers some truly sophisticated sound with a mellow funk groove. „At home“ takes you into a stylish living-room heated by a flickering fire and pleases with sparse but smooth horn arrangements.

Merriment is what you feel when listening to „Hot Day“ (reminding of some early Lemon Jelly tunes) but as beautiful as every single track may be, all leads up to the album’s crowning highlight. Since St. Germain’s legendary 1995 album „Boulevard“ there has definitely not been such an awesome jazz-based track as „Grass-hopper“, a cornucopia of stimulating impulses for mind and soul and irresistibly moving your legs. Better keep your dancing shoes at hand!

With „Filmothèque“, Lemongrass continues the legacy of his remarkable success and creates his own genre: space romanticism with a touch of playful Japanese aesthetics. To put it another way: An album to dream of and fall in love with…
