“When DJ Nartak puts his music on, the whole nation starts to relax.” That’s one of the interspersed jingles Klassik Radio is using to promote the “Nightflight” program, which is on air every Friday and Saturday. It may sounds a bit exaggerated, but it is not, if you consider that Klassik Radio’s network of frequencies reaches almost every corner of Germany. Over the past 7 years DJ Nartak’s “Nightflight” has become a shining star in the nightly musical cosmos. Not only on a national base, also internationally the number of fans increases constantly. Feedback from around the world shows a great appreciation for DJ Nartak’s musical signature.

The beauty of the auroral belt engraves the visual appearance of the 5th “Nightflight” compilation. An aptly chosen theme. There is a similarity of unfolding beauty between the Northern Lights and DJ Nartak’s mixes. Quiet and powerful, mysterious and alluring, subtle and sophisticated at the same time. Anyone who follows the “Nightflight” on the radio regularly, will find on the new double CD some of the artists that DJ Nartak presented over the last 12 months. Thus the compilation is near the heartbeat of the scene and reflects newest sound developments. The well-selected, international flock of artists is an expression for DJ Nartak’s claim to select music from around the globe. This time noticeable many artists come from the UK, which speaks for the immensely strong local scene. But there are great songs from Denmark, USA, Russia, Australia, France, Japan, and Germany too. Stylistically DJ Nartak follows his own pathway. He places emphasis on flow, on atmosphere. His mixes should be like a journey, leading us to unknown places of well-being and joyful listening. Typically his choice of musical elements and styles is variable. This has become another hallmark of his output. Music of different genres melt into one flow, unobtrusively and well-embedded forming up to a bigger picture. Nevertheless the compilation appears, more clearly than before, in an atmosphere of bright, sometimes almost meditative depth.

Already the opening title of CD01 with the formidable, “Mercury Music Price” nominated Jon Hopkins sets a mark. A piece of beauty, taken from the independent film “Monsters”, that forms with Animat’s “Liquid Fuel” to a mellow, cinematic entry. This gets deepened with Eskadet and Ohm-G before the American Yoga Master Snatam Kaur touches our soul, refined with a remix done by Cheb I Sabbah. Jasmon skillfully spinning on the thread with a tribute to Mother Earth in Peruvian “Quechua” language, followed by Sync24 and Bob Holroyd, who are giving the Nightflight more ambiental depth. Bob Holroyd’s “Parallels” got remixed by the Alternative scene heroes “The Album Leaf”. Also James Yorkston with his poetic, melancholy storytelling got gently refined, with a remix by Jon Hopkins. Tim Angrave and Krusseldorf deliver examples of modern electronic Downtempo sounds, before the Japanese artist Collioure attaches a soulful guitar. Dub Mars is reminiscent of the golden age of Massive Attack and Leftfield, followed by Spirit Jack, who endows us with minimal tricky Dub grooves towards the end of CD01.

The second disc begins with a feather-light, sunny piece from the trendy Russian label “Incepto Smooth”. With Placid Larry a cool and relaxed Downtempo groove is added. With his outstanding compositions Dee C’rell is a traveller between NuJazz, Electronica, Acoustic and Lounge. Followed by Chocolate Tannoy, Marty Bobgarner and Soulcraft, DJ Nartak shows his talent for beat emphasized grooves, culminating in Girish’s dynamic rhythms as an energetic climax. With Lo Tide the “Nightflight” gets airy again. His vibrant positive arrangements inspired even Michael Reinboth (Compost Records, Future Sound of Jazz). Sans Chichi is a new project from the legendary label ChinChin, sprinkling in a pinch of swinging bar atmosphere. Followed by Chris Zippel & Marcus Loeber, who released with “The backroom chambers” one of the best artist albums in 2012. Lemongrass Mastermind Roland Voss follows seamlessly, before the Danish act Lauge & Baba Gnohm brings us very close to the beauty of the auroral belt. The atmospheric depth is also home for James Murray, providing a dreamlike master piece of Ambient music. The final appearance is reserved to Man In A Room. Their emotional and epic “Prime” is the perfect ending for the nearly 2.5 hour long “Nightflight”.

Since October 2012 DJ Nartak is also responsible for the Saturday night of the famous “Klassik Lounge” show. A further evidence of DJ Nartak’s growing popularity as one of the leading figures of the Downtempo, Ambient and Chillout genre.

The highly acclaimed Karen Gibson Roc from Brooklyn comes next. Yin And Yang tell us the secret tale of “Laila”. Nana Wang is from Beijing / China. One of her hits called “Lost The Eden” received a refreshment by Lemongrass by adding a few jazzy elements and a warm swinging dubby groove. One of the Voss brothers projects is Jasmon, having a high reputation by loads of fans around the globe. After taking a creative break the project is back with a big bang. The beautiful piece of music, they surprise us with, is called “Pacha Mama”, and it is leaving us longing for more. Followed by MoShang’s “Dreams For Baku” which is a love letter to NuJazz Fusion. Another side project of the Voss brothers follows. Weathertunes doesn’t need any introduction. With “Sitting On The Moon With You” they go new ways by crossing the border to Soul and R&B, yet keeping the loungy and laidback vibe alive. Last but not least is the Japanese musician and producer Keisuke Sakai. Precious is his work by keeping the musical tradition of his country alive. His contribution “Cherry Blossom” is a meditative piece of fine repetitive guitar work, being so the perfect good-bye for this very special anniversary compilation.

DJ Nartak
has been travelling around the world working as a DJ since 1990. In addition to the Nightflight on Klassik Radio, he is known for a variety of other projects, such as “Globality”, “Liquid Sound”, “Sleepless …” and “Groove On, Earth!”. He was co-founder and label manager of Jubilee Records, Abstrait Music and Free Form. Since 2006 DJ Nartak has had his home base on Lanzarote.

Interview:
What can you tell us about the titles and artists that you chose for the compilation?

Basically, these are my highlights from the last two years. To me they reflect the Nightflight vibe in a wonderful way and make the concept literally audible. There are definitely some surprises here, which are otherwise hardly represented in other Ambient/Chillout compilations. For example “Sven Weisemann” and “Kollektiv Turmstrasse” are from the deep house genre, Josete Ordonez’s “Objetos perdidos” is a pure acoustic guitar piece, the “Tytingvåg Ensemble” comes from the Jazz scene, “Pulshar” is Spanish Dub-Styling and “Jamshied Sharifi & Hassan Hakmoun” belong to the world music section … In general, the global group of artists on Nightflight Vol.04 features many new names and hot insider tips. The compilation offers a representation of 12 countries…

How would you describe the musical journey and how did it develop?

At a quite early stage in the developing process, the compilation became a very wide atmospheric picture that I took up and tried to incorporate in the title selection and the mix. I want to invite the listener to lean back and listen to the relaxing and inspirational sounds. When the first cover design with space motifs arrived, this visual component perfectly fitted in with the project. To me the compilation truly represents our universe: sparkling, luminous, and infinite. I personally think the sound is very modern, but also somehow timeless. In other words, as the imagery of the compilation already shows: It’s like the vacuum that surrounds all the worlds…

For the musical part a true expert was assigned. Without any doubt DJ Nartak with his projects “Klassik Lounge Nightflight”, “Groove on, Earth!” and “Globality” belongs to a small group of leading figures in the international Downtempo scene. Well known for 20 years of DJing and an impressive list of compilation releases, he is also the founder of Jubilee Records, Abstrait Music and Free Form Records. In 2002 his collaboration with Liquid Sound and Micky Remann took shape by founding “Liquid Sound Music” – the platform for the legendary “Liquid Sound Vol.01″ which became a classic of the Ambient & Chillout scene.



DJ Nartak in his own words about his compiling and mixing work for “Liquid Sound Vol.03″:



What was important for you while selecting tracks for “Liquid Sound Vol.03″?


From the beginning I had this vision of creating a homogeneous musical journey, which would carry the vibes of Liquid Sound’s bathing and relaxation experience. At the same time it should also work for “dry listening” at home.My intention was not only to create a deep relaxing ambiental selection, I also wanted to show the different expressions water can have: sparkling, shimmering, powerful and free flowing This may sound like a conflict but it was the challenge I wanted to take on. I wanted the mix to lead the listener & floater carefully towards silence and letting go, at the same time offering inspiring musical impulses from different genres and musical sources. To bring this vision to life I received support from a wide and various bunch of artists and producers from all over the planet, whose contributions not only reflect their individual and cultural roots, but also – probably without them being aware of it – the sounds of water from their own local neighborhood. “Mirage of deep”, for instance, are from Spain, the “Aquarelsingers” are from Russia, “Caban” from Mexico, “Bahramji” is a Persian Sufi and the “Laya Project” comes from India. 



Are there any tracks on the compilation which are specially important to you?


To me, each and every tune and track on “Liquid Sound Vol.03″ is a highlight, because they are all pieces of the puzzle which complete the resulting sound. My highest respect to all artists and labels that are included! Some tracks have a story of their own or were particularly important right from the start. For example having double-”Academy Award” winner Gustavo Santaolalla on board is a great honor. His contribution is an excerpt from his outstanding “Nanga Parbat” soundtrack. Personal highlights are also the “Laya Project”, which carefully reflects the cultural background of the Tsunami 2004 region, or the blissful “Carbon based lifeforms” piece – delivered by the excellent French Ambient label “Ultimae Records”. Finally I would like to point out that quite a few tracks and mixes are especially composed for this Liquid Sound compilation. Among them are “Ohm-G”, “Pan”, “Broekhuis, Keller & Schönwälder”, “Mirage of deep” and “Weathertunes”, who created a beautiful “coming home” after the journey.
 


Can you tell us something about the collaboration with Micky Remann, the “Liquid Sound” initiator and cultural director of the Toskana thermal baths ? Did he influence your work?


Oh yes. Micky shared his experiences of his daily work with “liquid” music. He continuously deals with artists from different genres and different cultural background whom he invites to perform live on stage at the 3 Toskana thermal baths, where the music is actually transmitted and heard under water. Acts like “Broekhuis, Keller & Schönwälder” and “Aquarelsingers” were enjoyed by countless bathing guests in the water, now they are integrated in my mix. It’s also worth mentioning that Ohm-G’s “This is not the ocean”, in its original version was the opening track on “Liquid Sound Vol.01″. Over the years the tune developed to some sort of hymn or signature for Liquid Sound. Therefore we were extremely happy, that Ohm-G allowed us to do a special remix for our compilation. This was beautifully done by Jojo Büld (Junopilot, Dhoop-Sticks). I hope all of you will enjoy the big splash right at the beginning and the surprise appearance of an aircraft symbolizing, tongue-in-cheek, the take-off of our liquid journey…

The LIQUID SOUND planning team constantly investigates innovations in the fields of audio, light, video, multimedia, Internet technology and event trends and tests their applicability with and to water. Communication and exchanges among different LIQUID SOUND baths ensures that each LIQUID SOUND installation harmonises and inspires the other. The spirit of LIQUID SOUND is dedicated to open artistic exploration of the medium of water. Water knows no limits to creative expression other than ones own imagination.

Besides the world of music and Spa, LIQUID SOUND also has a root in interspecies communication. The original inspiration came from musical interactions with free Orca whales in the Canadian Pacific, initiated by US artist Jim Nollmann. After joining one of these journeys, German writer and media artist Micky Remann decided to pay tribute to the whales by opening up the experience of under water music to humans. LIQUID SOUND was born. People who now enjoy the soft and gentle underwater sounds are also encouraged to support the campaign for silent oceans, in order to stop acoustic pollution of the whales’ natural habitat.

Slightly more than a year after the last edition, Roland and Daniel Voss have done enough research, put in diligent work and waited patiently enough to see their garden blossoming once more. New artists such as Dawn Sessions (Finland), Weed (Romania), Kiwi Twist (Greece), Alexandra Hampton (U.S.A). and Airily (Japan) are eager to assume their role in the label family, while established artists like Glam Sam from Sweden as well as T2’n and Eskadet from France allow some insight into their upcoming albums. Among the many highlights on this compilation are the mid-tempo broken beats crossed with jazz-funk breaks by Kondencoutas Pienas feat. Lounge du soleil Vol.7 is coming up with new great works of artists from all over the planet.
The first section of the compilation is really groovy and full of kinetic energy while the second half is more relaxing and even a bit dreamy.
Starting with T2′n from France and his track “Charly One” which is an always present ear-catcher, the journey goes on with Finland trio “Northbound” and a new track of Glam Sam and his Combo, who have recently released the successful debut album “Groovy!” on Lemongrassmusic. Later, Marty Bobgarner (another project by T2′n producer Thierry Frossard) shows us “The illusion of life” and is followed by Romanian group “Weed” who carress our souls with their “A sigh becomes a thousand trees”. On his 6th rendition of the Lounge du Soleil series, Roland Voss has compiled a host of the most diverse sounds from all over the world. With Carlos Yebra (Spain), T2’n and The angel flies in the sky (both from France), Kondencoutas Pienas (Lithuania), Redlounge Orchestra (Germany), Nowhere (Italy) and PJR Peter Rooke (Australia), seven of the assembled artists make their first appearance, adding new colours to the Lounge du Soleil peace corps.

From Carlos Yebra’s cool downtempo/leftfield approach of „Sea Foam“ to the cinematic offering of Redlounge „Ennophonic“, and from Newton’s soothing „Adore“ to the brazil-flavoured and good-humoured easy listening sounds of $uperchrome’s „Plastic Funk“, you are constantly surprised by skillful changes in styles and vibes.

All those who take most pleasure in vocal tracks should pay special attention to antennasia „Yojigen, Kosa, Shingo, Ikiru“ (Embee remix) and Nowhere feat. Kay Dee the Bee „Odessa“. Whereas the first is an ingenious encounter of Japanese singer san and renowned Swedish hip hop producer Embee, the latter once more underlines the outstanding vocal skills of French singer Kay Dee. Mysteriously seductive and deliciously enchanting!

US project 7b „Butterworth’s“ provide a nice extended interlude with their unobtrusive deep house arrangements before German project Five Seasons take over with their seemingly epic „Got That Feeling“, which then all of a sudden gives us a compelling flute break. The following „From Bombay to Paris“ by French artist Escadet takes over with gentle oriental percussions but then speeds up and leads an imaginary trip to the clubs of Paris.

Other highlights include „My baby laughs“ by The angel flies in the sky, a track which combines the real laughing of a baby with the electronic version of a baby’s musical box and broken beats. Then it’s time for PJR Peter Rooke who in his „Groove Inspector“ knows how to flavour his chill house sounds with a feelgood vibe and and a pinch of 1980s sounds. Swedish project Glam Sam and his Combo once more change directions with their unique mixture of slow-motion funk & soul, carried by a jazzy guitar and some nice horns and organ contributions.

Lounge du Soleil Vol. 6 is probably the most surprising offering of the well-established series. It is a marvellous treasure box of diverse musical approaches from all over the world, arranging the tracks in a way which is most entertaining, delightful and promising: the closer you listen, the more you will salvage.

The gardeners have done it again. On this third edition, artists from 13 countries and 4 continents find their perfect place within the garden of enthralling vibes and enticing aromas. The third edition of sunny download compilation series „Lounge du Soleil“ takes us on another breathtaking and inspiring journey around the world. Among the 16 gorgeous offerings are 11 previously unreleased tracks, introducing new artists like Mo Shang (Taiwan), Karen Gibson Roc (Jamaica/New York), US project 7b, Mark Oakland (Portugal) and Rencause, a side project of Berlin producer Chris Zippel.

Leading into the compilation are Russian Aguaflames whose Brazilian-flavoured „Ya-Fu“ comes as a tender ballad with gentle vocals and laid-back beats. After JetTricKs feat- AdeFunKe & Faye Houston entice you with their subtly orchestrated vocal pop jewel „Lose You“, Rencause makes you dive into warm ocean waves with „Breeze“. The following cross-continental collaboration Tafubar vs. Mo Shang (Italy vs. Taiwan) allows a preview to this years’s upcoming Tafubar album. After two previous LdS appearances, the project here surprises with a spheric intstrumental track. The next counterpoint is perfectly placed with Karen Gibson Roc who with „Some Other Place“ makes an elegant spoken word contribution. Two tracks on the funky side are next to come. While the bouncy beat of 7b feat. Kay Dee the Bee turns „Lucky You“ into an uplifting NuJazz tune, Finland’s Northbound radiate a SlowFunk vibe in best Thievery Corporation style, inviting for an early morning stroll.

Another twist lends Mark Oakland who adds a deep and thoughtful, almost meditative touch. Beach hoppers introduce Berlin singer Jana Tarasenko who lets her vocals flow over the idle shuffle of D&B beats. The compilation „Lemongrass Garden Vol. 2“ sets new standards in the realm of imaginativeness, playfulness and versatile arrangements. Everything goes – as long as it is good to listen to. If you pay close attention you can feel the smile of the producers behind every single track. One of the biggest merits of Roland and Daniel Voss however is to continually dig new artists from all over the world (France, Italy, Japan, South Korea and U.S.A.) who enrich their unique sound universe.

Outstanding productions come especially at the hands of US project Manalili (with a beautiful vocal track based on feathery D&B beats), and the French project Kay Dee (who adorn the garden with a sly R&B composition). Both tracks go beyond common expectations and add rich new aromas to the new masterpiece of the Voss brothers. Their „Garden Vol. 2“ is as sun-drenched as strangely faded (like old polaroids) and makes the listener indulge in his most beloved memories.

Their track with whispered vocals and Indian instrumentals sends the listener on an intensive journey full of mysterious drama. The following track „Ayume” by South Korean artist Hana catches with slow motion beats and graceful vocals tripping on dreamy string arrangements. Then a break and some heavy beats… This moment of surprise is one of the key characteristics of „Garden Vol. 2“ as a whole. Again and again, pads are pierced with playful elemtents, smooth sounds opposed with obscure noises and dominant beats intertwined with beautiful melodies. Take Lemongrass feat. Skadi „Habla Mi Corazón“, a rather dramatic tune where all of a sudden an organ takes over to play its sweet melody – which then evaporates as quickly as it has surfaced.

The aforementioned R&B track „Surrender Ur Mind“ by Kay Dee amazes with the rhythmic orchestration of panpipes (!) and urging dance factor – right before iëlo delivers „On Your Mind“, a deep tune heavily accentuated in Lemongrass’ India Mix. Here, the aesthetics of the film noir genre grippingly merge with ethno sounds and club beats. The wonderful vocal track „Beauty Myth“ by Manalili relies on relaxed D&B beats and almost solemn piano notes – a pop song of the highest standards. Japanese artist Yukiko Iiri then takes over with her hypnotic slow motion song reverberating long after it has actually ended.

Of course, the Voss brothers have some great new sounds in store as well, and introduce their new projects Five Seasons and Beach hoppers. While „In Your Town“ combines heavy beats with warm saxophone notes, „Sax on the Beach“ is carried by a bouncy beat and accompanied with the ocean’s murmur. Jasmon’s „Lotus Love“ surprises with the feel of an old-fashioned dance tune (which would support the soundtrack of „Dr. Shivago“) and is countered by obscure samples and underlying beats. Good stuff, indeed.

When you enter the exotic garden of Lemongrassmusic you encounter the ingenious diversity of an artfully cultivated park. All songs emanate varying aromas of juicy fruits or scents of rich spices. All selected titles are previously unreleased and exclusive, with the exception of songs by Maria und antennasia which have been released in Japan.

For Western taste, far-eastern blossoms are among the most alluring. That’s why antennasia, a project of producer Manabu Ito aka Nerve and singer San guides us best into the garden. The duo makes it to Europe for the first time after releasing in Japan for over five years. Their lugubrious opening track „Lost“ reminds of early Björk songs while „Sorrow“ also belongs to a world of melancholy but simultaneously has an airy touch. Japanese singer Maria is a sister of Mayu Kawata whose voice blesses the topical Lemongrass album “Ikebana”. Her Song „To Be Happy“ sounds like a modern Acid Jazz ballad crowned with twinkling vocals. Dugsoul aka DJ Nob Tee comes from Tokyo. As his former releases on Mole Listening Pearls, this track is a tasty Jazz and Funk collage which would be the perfect sound track to a Tokyo detective story. Even the eccentric title has a catchy edge: „X-ray Milky Way Murasaki“. Another mysterious affair is the name of Eurasian Macro-system singer Voice.03T. In stark contrast to her technoid name, her classically trained voice comes as a big surprise. The kitschy and monumental arrangement of producer Shigeyuki Nishimura aka S24 takes her to unforeseen hights and makes listeners immerse in a well-designed pond of colourful sounds.

With Torsten Kotter aka Derrick we come across another acquaintance from back in the days: this Berlin artist and producer had contributed to Lemongrass’ very first album “Drumatic Universe”. His Fusion track „Eternal Spring“ excels with pleasant grooves and counterbalances his „Discovering Your Smile“ offered under the project name Amun. The track’s heavy D&B beats and charming arrangements make this tune one of the compilation’s highlights. Must be the smile of an Asian beauty! Maomakmaa is a new plant in Lemongrass’ lush and copious garden. The „Einsiedler“ (i.e. „hermit“) of Berlin producer Erich Lesovsky must have found a stage of enlightenment as the effervescent arrangement suggests.

Lemongrass aka Roland Voss contributes two new tracks: While the jazzy tune “Fritz the Cat” make us feel good with its cheery arrangement, “Feel It“ (feat. Mayu Kawata) takes us straight to the dancefloor. More leg action is triggered as soon as the first beats of „Tuulia“ set in. This Asian House track comes at the hands of another side project of Roland Voss: Jasmon who after two album releases sound as fresh as ever. Under the name of Weathertunes the Voss brothers have been releasing since 1998. Both their tracks provide a first preview to the album “Beam Me In” which will be released in 2006 on Jubilee Records (Germany) and Receptortune (Japan). After last year’s debut album „Terratronica“(released on Receptortune), Green Empathy (a solo project of Daniel Voss) displays his wide musical range. The piano-based track „Kamasutra“ appeals with smooth beats. „Swans“, on the other hand, accelerates and takes us on a imaginary vivacious journey through Japan’s blossoming countryside in spring. Again, both tracks herald the upcoming album “Souvenirs” which is also scheduled for 2006.
