Come on board and join Jasmon (alias Roland Voss, a.k.a. “Lemongrass”) on a sublime trip to the “East”. A treat for those who seek a modern but harmonious perspective of World Music Electronica. Based on a broad sound cosmos, these 12 songs maneuver through the magic of the eastern world. A spellbinding, soul-soothing journey, guided by Jasmon’s favour for organic sounds and instrumentation. Delicate tablas take the lead on the longing “Caravans In The Desert”, accompanied by an irresistible guitar theme. While “Dum Danum” features sacred Indian chanting, the “Indian Ocean” embraces with a warm, feel good vibe. The song is a collaboration with “Slow World” – a moniker of Daniel Voss, who is also the other half of Lemongrassmusic. While travelling, Jasmon allows itself a little time-out here and there. Tracks like “Surfer Beach” invite you to relax and to clear your head for adventures to come. The 5th album of the project since its foundation back in the late 90s, flows and meanders as a river does. A virtual, dreamlike journey, that leads us to places of beauty and serenity. Picking the appropriate ingredients from Middle East, Asia and all around the Oriental world, appears almost effortless throughout the whole album. To put that in balance with the finest of Downtempo and Lounge Electronica, showcases the matured skills and instinct of Roland Voss aka Jasmon, turning his releases into masterpieces of the scene, and here it’s no different. This mesmerizing trip to the “East” leaves a unique aroma, longing for more.

In search of the “true” mystical world of the Orient, Jasmon’s music is a reliable guide and a root of trust. Based on carefully selected, traditional native instruments, sounds and voices, conflated with laid-back beats and soul-stirring Chillout smoothness, “From Orient To Occident” takes us on emotional, sonorous musical pathways.

Originally founded as a side-project by Lemongrass mastermind Roland Voss during a collaboration with Berlin-based producer and musician Genetic Drugs, “From Orient To Occident” is the essence of 17 years creating finest Downtempo and Global Fusion. Selected with utmost grace and sensibility, the album presents Roland Voss’s distinctive vision in full. A vast and shimmering collection, taken from six different Jasmon album releases. It spans almost two decades from the highly acclaimed “Spacecake” album (Blue Flame Records), up to their maturest release called “Shangri-La” on Lemongrassmusic.

While the opener “Cuchama” works on a laid-back TripHop groove intertwined with fragile chants and string arrangements, “Bosporus” already establishes the Jasmon soundscape in full flavour. A beautiful homage to the majestic Turkish river, leaving us with salty air on our tongue and bittersweet longing in our hearts. Next is one of Jasmon’s most famous songs called “Hanina”. No surprise that the track made it on various “Putumayo” compilations. As contrast, “Chidambaram” perking up ears with an innovative soundclash, combining dynamic breakbeats and dub elements with field recordings from India and Africa.

The longer we listen, the album builds up a subtle, snake-charming hypnotism. Beguiled by yearningly vocals and chantings, embedded in a sensual instrumentation, the album is a substantial, emotional journey filled with sonic imagery, which absolutely demands repeat listening. A superb work from a team of true masters of the craft. Accompanied by Mohammed Mounir, Genetic Drugs and his brother Daniel Voss, who is also the other half of Lemongrassmusic, Jasmon’s soundscapes feel like a warm embrace. All of a sudden it dawns on us, that the ancient Occident is not a destination to be reached, it is the spirit Jasmon carries, note by note. Go and get your fantasy stimulated, again and again.

They have been released in Germany, Japan and Russia, which is a clear indication of Jasmon’s global recognition and also an expression of the close personal reference to the Asian region. The debut album “Spacecake” (2001) was a collaboration with the artist and producer Genetic Drugs, enriching the Jasmon sound with elements of African rhythms and trance plus specially recorded Indian musicians and field-recordings while travelling through the country. But already the successor called “Gentle flowers” brought the project to the point. The minimal production aptly recalls the clarity and one-pointedness of the Zen culture and was internationally a great success. Suddenly Jasmon was everywhere. Rarely tradition and modernity of electronic music merged so homogeneously in a creative expression. The following releases “Cosmic Trigger” and “Hammock dreams” have been published on their own label platform Lemongrassmusic. With a stronger connection to Lounge Music, Jasmon added fresh stylistic facets to continue exploring their musical path.

And here it is: “Shangri-La”. As Jasmon’s musicians and producers Roland and Daniel Voss keep pointing out, the long break was not intentional. With patience and the experience of 20 years in the music industry, they know the importance of the creative spark. Once inflamed, the Jasmon sound starts to glow in bright light. Precisely this moment was important to both of them. For the listener it is a blessing and a vital expression of the unique quality of “Shangri-La”. With the courage to let things expand in silence, the strength of the album lays inside. Pleasantly calm and always relaxed “Shangri-La” takes us on a journey. The selection of traditional sounds and instruments is excellent and at the same time extremely variable. Ancient Ukrainian songs meet Indian tabla and sitar. From Japan we hear a Koto harp and Shakuhachi flute, from Thailand a Khim, as well as the Chinese Gu Zheng.

All this is carefully blended into electronic sounds and grooves. An almost invisible audio frame is set with the intention to accompany discretely. Majestically, calm, sometimes with a sweet longing of melancholy, but always atmospherically wide open – this is how the 15 songs appear. “Shangri-La” can open spaces to let the spirit fly. The album is an invitation to listen and to let go. A precious moment of meditation in the hectic events of our day to day life.

Relying on the same recipe as on the preceding album „Cosmic Trigger“, Jasmon include global instruments, sounds and voices, and intertwine them with laid-back beats and obscure samples. Dramatic sequences alternate with playful melodies, urban beats compete with ethno sounds, fragile vibes build up to climactical moments. The fine result is no razzle-dazzle but an amazing achievement, as Jasmon know how to embed their concoction in quirky, multi-layered arrangements.

Right from the start, the sophisticated D&B beats of „Bamboo Queen“ establish a nippy pace. While some warm oriental touch tenderly embraces the beat before pushing the song further along, two breaks further increase the dance factor. A feast for the ears which whets the appetite for more. The following „Prince of Persia“ reduces the speed in favour of its playfulness but stays alive and kicking with its underlying bass drum and sparkling piano chords. Another gem paving the way towards the album’s highlights.

One of these outstanding tracks is „Maria“. Equipped with heavy hip hop beats, dramatic arrangement, Indian vocals and raps, this production stands all comparisons with American chart hits but still manages to fit in and enrich Jasmon’s sound universe. With „Flying Carpet“ you are riding on a powerful train to the next station (watch out – you’ll hear it!) – massive, deep and based on padded, almost choral arrangements. Then „Lotus Love“ surprises with the feel of an old-fashioned dance tune before it is countered with obscure samples and underlying beats. Good stuff, indeed.

Mysterious strings, heavy percussion, slow-motion sounds and 1980s ambience are the striking features of epic „Mountain Peak“, before all hell is breaking loose. „I like it“ makes you rub eyes and ears with wonder. Where do the Voss brothers take their audacity to produce and present such a track? Their motto „everything goes“ has reached the summit of perfection. Big beat, psychedelic rock, film music and easy listening of the 1960s, funky guitars, scat vocals, a forceful beat plus Indian sounds and vocals all find their rightful place to create a fascinating sound experience which takes you to the floor.

For goodness sake, Jasmon offer some time to take a breather. „Cruiser“ takes the listener on an almost esoteric trip, although the lackadaisical beat soon turns into a tricky D&B variety. „Himalaya“ comes as a tranquil but intense track which captivates with versatile percussion elements, crafty hall effects, and an accomplished break. „Blue Water“ is another one of these wonderful slow-motion tracks. Spiced up by bulky sounds and guitar samples, it involves the breaking of the waves, soft rainfall and distant thunder to establish a truly poignant vibe.

While the frugal, almost minimal arrangement of „Chant“ allows the Asian voices to shine with beauty, „Pardesi“ once more wins over with heavy beats and rhythmic percussion. Two more tracks with a relaxed flow take the album to the concluding „Garden of Peace“ – an abounding cornucopia of sounds and samples. Careful listening reveals some fine Asian touch, elements of 1960s film music, chirping birds, splashing waters and slow beats of the kettledrum. A truly surprising track and wonderful ending of Jasmon’s substantial offerings.

This ingenious audio cinema of big emotions takes you on a fantastic journey: in one hour around the world, through music history and deep into your own self. Intense and enigmatic – danceable, soothing and relaxing.
