This time he brought a bunch of good funky friends to the studio to create the happiest block party vibes that Stockholm has to offer. Yes, Glam Sam proudly presents: Stockholm City Soul.
Kicking off with the essence of cool, the groove of ”All Around Town” is already keeping the jazzheads of London, Berlin and Tokyo happy. And that flute! Man, is it Bobbi Humphrey in the good old Blue Note years?
Then over to lyricist Prop Dylan, delivering his poetry to a deep funk groove. ”Keep On Moving Through The Bullshit And Pain” is old school hiphop based on jazzy funk and will get you prepared for the party.

When all the guests are arriving, ”The Uptown Flow” is pulling them to the dance floor right away. Oh man, is it May 1984 or is it the future? This good time groove is clearly inspired by the old school of the 80s, but when the jazz dude on sax kicks in, the vibe gets beyond time, beyond space…
Ok, the party is on. Say no more, it’s on. On stage: Rapper King Chris, or shorter Rapper KC, getting all the hands in the air while spitting out the hit song ”Diamonds In The Rough”. And all the breakers and shakers, let’s give it a go to ”Fly B-Boys And Fly B-Girls”, another anthem of the type that has been missed since the Sugarhill Gang left the building.

Ok, time for some facts.

Disco music was initially called discotheque music.
Its first audiences were club-goers from the African American, Latino, Italian American, gay and psychedelic communities in New York City and Philadelphia during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Disco was a reaction against the domination of rock music and the stigmatization of dance music.
In what is considered a forerunner to disco clubs, the DJ David Mancuso opened The Loft, a members-only dance club set in his own home in New York City in February 1970.

Five years later there were more than 10 000 disco clubs, only in the States.
The first article about disco was written in September 1973. Author: Vince Aletti for the Rolling Stone magazine.

The first disco radio show started in 1974 in New York City. Station: WPIX-FM.

The first #1 song on the American disco chart upon its debut on November 2, 1974 was “Never Can Say Goodbye” by Gloria Gaynor. Disco diva Gloria Gaynor was crowned “Disco Queen” on March 3, 1975 by the National Association of discotheque disc jockeys.

The musical influences include funk, latin and soul music. The disco sound has soaring, often reverberated vocals over a steady “four-on-the-floor” beat, an eighth note or 16th note hi-hat pattern with an open hi-hat on the off-beat, and a prominent, syncopated electric bass line sometimes consisting of octaves.

In most disco tracks, strings, horns, electric pianos, and electric guitars create a lush background sound. Yeah.

The movie “Saturday Night Fever” and its soundtrack are what really throttled disco into popular culture in 1977. Many see this as the beginning of the end for disco.

The mass production of watered-down disco songs and constant radio airplay led a lot of rock ‘n’ roll fans to coin the phrase “Disco Sucks!”

Disco haters rallied in Chicago on July 12, 1979, to attend the “Disco Demolition Night”, an event that many people peg as the night disco died.

They were wrong.

Then Edison tells a story about a day in a life. Sounds quite nice, you can have success without bling on your wrist, right? ”Sippin’ Sunkist” is a piece of groovy old school hiphop with a jazzy twist.

”Come Danceletta” takes you back to the Brooklyn dance floor as Glam Sam teams up with a gang of jazz dudes that can’t let go of the disco fling.

So, time to slow down, yes, even a Brooklyn man must take it easy every now and then. ”Deep In My Soul ” is soulful jazzy hiphop at its best, with Edison delivering his thoughtful poetry and a horn section that will make you think about the Tower Of Power horns.

”Some Lazy Shit” will end this chapter of the Glam Sam story. A down-to-earth sound, built around a funky bass player and the dude fingering on his organ and even an acoustic guitar.

Yes, it’s time so start the happy party again! The mysterious Swedish groove man Mr Glam Sam has been cooling things down in his shining Riviera studio, and now it’s time to return to the world.

Get ready for the new cool’n’jazzy offering from the man, the 6-track EP named The Riviera Sessions.

The music is heavily inspired by the sunny glamorous days of Côte d’Azur, when Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn were the top ladies and Miles Davies knocked everybody on stage in the Gould Pine Grove in Juan-les-Pins.

The opening track “Brigitte” has an overwhelmingly charming vibe to it, with funny time-typical samples and an intense jazzy rhythm section. And then the flute man comes along! Oh man, does he blow his lungs out, or what?

“Intermezzo” is Glam Sam’s funky ode to the spy movie music of the 60’s, presenting the theme of the coolest and most stylish spy movie never made.

When listening to “The Riviera Stroll” you find yourself cheerful, smiling and just totally relaxed, singing along and snapping fingers to a fine jazz guitar and a pumping horn section. Yes, jazz music can be this fun!

Then the sun sets and the night gets sweet, oh, so sweet and funny. What else could be the case when you’re celebrating the golden age with the best of friends? The jazz ballad “Those Sweet And Funny Nights” captures this mood – and on top you get a sax and even a trombone solo that makes you shout: “This is the new birth of the Cool!”

But even a charming Riviera man gets the blues every now and then, as can be heard on the heart-felt Blues du Soleil.

Glam Sam and his Combo is the brain child of Mats Samuelsson, a Stockholm-based journalist, writer and music lover. Back in the days he got involved in a promising indie jazz-pop duo in Sweden, but after a couple of fine demos the dudes quit the game and returned to university.
Suddenly, too many years later, Mr Samuelsson stepped out as Glam Sam, formed his Combo and started a musical adventure based on pure joy. Only one thing was settled: the music should be, must be and will be: Groovy!
During a year of inspirational fun, these 18 tracks evolved and got filled with all the things Glam Sam loves about music: the jazz, the disco, the funk and the soul, the grooves and the coolness as well as fun samples and top vocals.
The bubbling jazzy and funky rhythm section is accompanied with swaying pianos, rhodes, groovy guitars and organs, playful horns and, yeah, some vibraphones as well.
